Contemporary music fundi Coenie de Villiers and Afrikaans’ own Hip Hop star HemelBesem on one stage? But they are worlds apart! This might be some people’s reaction to the collaboration of these two well-known artists for their brand new show – “Oor een stem” (Literally “Over one voice”, a play on the Afrikaans word “ooreenstem” (“agree”) – during a picnic concert at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl on Saturday 18 March 2017.
Coenie and Hemelbesem have however often collaborated in the past and have huge respect for one another’s talent and art. “Oor een stem” promised to take the audience on a journey of their (not so different) lives, loves and passions. Rapper YOMA will also join them on stage.
The show begins at 19:30 in the Garden Theatre, located on the lawn right at the foot of the monument. The gates open at 17:00. Visitors are welcome to bring their own drinks and picnic basket or they can order one (at R250 for two persons or R350 with a basket included) from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800). Volksmond will be open for coffee, beer, wine and light refreshments.
Tickets are pre-sold at Computicket and the Taalmonument, as well as at the gate, at R100 for adults and R50 for students and children. Chairs are only allowed with prior arrangement and smoking only in designated smoking areas (not on the lawns). Remember to bring a blanket or cushion and warm clothes. Safe parking is available and access is controlled.
The concert forms part of the Garden Theatre Picnic Series in aid of the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument’s “Let us read!” project for children. The last concert in the series is Die Heuwels Fantasties on 31 March 2017. For more information, call 021 863 0543/4809 or visit www.taalmonument.co.za and www.facebook.com/afrikaansetaalmonument.
