During the October school holidays Laat ons Lees! (Let us Read!), the reading project of the Afrikaans Taalmuseum en -monument (Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument) (ATM) in Paarl, brings a puppet show to eight libraries in Drakenstein as part of their Heritage Month celebrations.
The puppet show, by the Kaleidoskoop drama group of the Breytenbach Centre in Wellington, focuses on the importance of books and reading. It is presented on the following dates and times: 3 October (Saron Library at 10:00, Gouda Library at 14:00), 5 October (Wellington Library at 10:00, Wellington Readers’ Library at 14:00), 6 October (Mbekweni Library at 10:00, Groenheuwel Library at 14:00), 7 October (Paarl Library at 10:00, Drakenstein Library at 14:00). Bookings must be made at the libraries.
According to Janine Brown, educational officer at the ATM, the purpose of the project is to cultivate a reading culture, promote a love for books and create an environment where learners feel at home amongst books. The ATM has reached thousands of children since the project was launched in 2013. The project is aimed at schools and communities in rural areas where there is a shortage of books and reading facilities. In Porterville, Wellington and Paarl the ATM supplies books to adults who read to groups of children once a week.
The ATM invites the public, bookshops and publishers to donate books to the reading project – any books in any language, new or secondhand. For more information, contact Janine Brown at 021 872 3441 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
