The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument once again put the emphasis on the ‘Afrika’ in Afrika(ans) during the celebrations of Africa Day on Saturday, 25 May 2019. At 12 o’clock the African Union’s official song was played and its flag hoisted to kickstart the proceedings. After that, a free guided tour of the monument focused on the language’s African roots and Afrikaans’s influence on other African languages. The iThemba Ensemble Marimba Group and the Voce Armoniche Choir performed captivating African songs, which was greatly appreciated by amongst others a local youth group and a group of senior citizens. The visitors also enjoyed a delicious meal. We will do this again in 2020!
