In honour of Madiba, Taalmonument ‘adopts’ a school

Mandela-dag Groenberg Primêr Taalmonument 2019

There were smiles all round when learners from Groenberg Primary yesterday, on Nelson Mandela Day, received a surprise visit from the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM). Not only did the Taalmonument ‘adopt’ this school outside Wellington for a year in honour of Madiba, but also spoiled the children with an interactive puppet show, and many fun and practical gifts. To make this an absolute memorable day, Radio KC broadcasted the event directly from school. The Taalmonument provided backpacks, toiletries, sweets, reading books (donated by Biblionef) as well as a meal to all the learners.

According to ATM director, Michael Jonas, the project is part of the institution’s mission to serve the immediate community and promote social cohesion. “We will also launch a year-long reading project to promote a love for specifically Afrikaans books among the learners,” says Jonas.

At the end of the year, the learners will visit the monument and museum free of charge to learn more about these iconic institutions. They will also attend a Christmas party in honour of them and will, among other things, receive school supplies for 2020.
