The Taalmonument hiking trail

This circular route is about 1.2km long and will take you about half an hour to complete.

  • The route is suitable for all (fit AND unfit), but remember your hiking shoes!
  • The route is easily accessible (it begins and ends at the childrens’ play park in front of Volksmond Coffee Shop)
  • Groups of more than 20 need to pre-book.
  • What does it cost? The usual entry fee (adults: R25, SA students: R10, children: R5, and free for children under six years, year permit R120/R220).
  • A key for the gate must be collected from the Visitor Centre for which a R20 deposit is payable. An indemnity form must be completed.

Hiking trails in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve

  • The Taalmonument is situated next to Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve with easy access to a network of hiking trails.
  • Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is managed by Drakenstein Municipality and not by the Taalmonument, but the hiking trails can be accessed via the Taalmonument:
  • What does it cost? The usual entry fee (adults: R25, SA students: R10, children: R5, and free for children under six years, year permit R120/R220).
  • A key for the gate must be collected from the Visitor Centre for which a R20 deposit is payable. An indemnity form must be completed.
  • A map of Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is for sale at the Visitor Centre at the Taalmonument.
  • The hiking trails can also be accessed via Meulwater Camping Site inside Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, via the Jan Philips gravel road (where a entry fee is payable on weekends and public holidays).
