Taalmonument celebrates Language Month with ‘Korreltjie Kantel’
Afrikaans writers’ smouldering relationship intimately portrayed
‘Korreltjie klein is my woord
korreltjie niks is my dood’ – Korreltjie Sand by Ingrid Jonker
In celebration of Language Month, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) are delighted to present the highly acclaimed ‘Korreltjie Kantel’, a musical theatre production about poet Ingrid Jonker and writer André P Brink’s love affair, on Saturday 18 August.
The three masterful musicians and songwriters – Luna Paige, Nick Turner and Jamie Jupiter – have converted Jonker’s poetry and the love letters between the two writers into touchingly beautiful musical creations. Besides the musical ingenuity, guests can look forward to a soulful performance by the award-winning Wessel Pretorius and Christine Truter. These seasoned actors perform the roles of a young Ingrid and André; their magical interpretation of the two-year-long relationship between the South African literary figures has been widely lauded.
Besides with love, the winter chill will also be warmed away with delicious sherry, fragrant soup and healthy bread. ‘Korreltjie Kantel’ was originally a production commissioned for the RSG Arts Festival in 2015, but has since been spurred on annually thanks to Iluminar Productions. So much so that this beautiful show has attracted standing ovations and full houses during this year’s Woordfees and the CD has been nominated for a SAMA award for Best Afrikaans Contemporary Album.
Space is limited, so to experience this soulful masterpiece, book a ticket on 021 863 0543, Computicket or Shoprite/Checkers at R80 each. The evening commences at 19:00 in the Historium building in Pastorie Avenue, Paarl. Language month is celebrated every August to acknowledge all the historical events linked to the development of Afrikaans in this month.
