Popular artists Arno Carstens and Refentse are to perform as part of the Garden Theatre Picnic Series at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl on Friday 2 December 2016. The picnic series is held in aid of the “Let us read!” project for children.

Arno Carstens, known as solo artist and lead singer of Springbok Nude Girls, released his first Afrikaans album, “Die Aandblom 13”, in September. His performance will include “something old, something known and something totally new”.

The 19 year old Refentse Morake became an overnight sensation as an unknown busker with a fresh take on iconic Afrikaans songs. He calls Afrikaans “the language of my heart”. His first CD, “My Hart Bly In ‘n Taal”, recently reached platinum status.

The show begins at 19:30 in the Garden Theatre, located on the lawn right at the foot of the monument. The gates open at 17:00. Visitors are welcome to bring their own drinks (no glass) and picnic basket or they can order one from Volksmond Coffee Shop (tel. 021 863 2800). Volksmond will be open for coffee, beer, wine and light refreshments.

Tickets are pre-sold at Computicket and the Taalmonument, at R140 for adults, R130 for students and R70 for children under 13 year. No smoking or chairs are allowed in the Garden Theatre. Remember to bring a blanket or cushion and warm clothes. Safe parking is available and access is controlled.

The Picnic concert series also include performances by Coenie de Villiers, Hemelbesem and Yoma (6 January 2017), a Valentine’s Concert (with artists including André Schwartz on 14 February 2017), The Rockets (27 January 2017), Bobby van Jaarsveld (24 February 2017), Amanda Strydom and Jak de Priester (10 March 2017) and Die Heuwels Fantasties (31 March 2017).
