Knit-athon in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day
The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM) in Paarl, in collaboration with Paarl Museum and the Dorkas and Busy Beez Women’s Clubs, will present their annual knit-athon in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day, on Saturday 24 June 2017.
According to Janine Brown, Educational Officer at the ATM, this initiative supports the purpose of Mandela Day to inspire individuals to make the world a better place by spending 67 minutes of their time to make a change in someone’s life.
“We would like to warm the hearts of needy persons and help them to face the winter with a donation of knitted scarves, jerseys and blankets. We have already formed several groups who are knitting items in aid of this project. We challenge everyone to join us. If you can’t knit, we’ll teach you!”
The knit-athon starts at 09:00 at Paarl Museum on Van der Lingen Plain and will end at 14:00. Participants must bring their own knitting needles, and are encouraged to bring along wool, although wool will also be supplied.
The knitted items, as well as soup and sandwiches, will be distributed to needy adults and children in Groenheuwel, Fairyland and Klapmuts on 18 July 2017. Donations of wool, clothes, toys and canned food will also be appreciated. It must be dropped off, by Tuesday 11 July 2017, at the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum in Pastorie Avenue or at Paarl Museum on Van der Lingen Plain.
