Popular Haarhoff offers fun workshops at Taalmonument

If you want to immortalise unforgettable moments and scenes more beautifully, the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument (ATM) once again offers two spring workshops with photography trainer Peter Haarhoff on 7 September and 5 October 2024 (Saturdays).

For those that want to stop using the camera on “automatic” and do not have time for extended photography courses, this enjoyable one-day beginners course on 7 September is ideal. It is a practical, bilingual programme which means that you can immediately work on what you have learned under the watchful eye of your photo coach. The theory takes place in the meeting room after which everyone will practise how to take fantastic photos of humans, nature and structures at the picturesque monument.

The following aspects will be highlighted:

  • Take control of your DSLR camera;
  • How to use program and manual options;
  • How the lens aperture controls the depth of field;
  • Set your shutter speed for truly creative photography;
  • White balance and ISO settings;
  • Flash photography and exposure compensation;
  • Filters and social media like Instagram; and
  • How to compose better photos and much more.

The advanced course is on 5 October and is ideal for participants who have completed a beginner course or have a good understanding of shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings, and feel comfortable taking photos in manual mode. To take your photography to the next level, this will teach you how to take outstanding photos by exploring more complex camera techniques and applying new thinking to the photographic process. The balance between the technical and creative aspects of photography will also be refined.

Both courses take place at the Taalmonument on Paarl Mountain from 09:00 to 16:00. It costs only R400 per person, which includes a free visit to the monument as well as refreshments. Participants can bring their own lunch or support the Suikerkan bistro where they receive a 10%-discount. Participants must bring their own DSLR camera or any camera with manual control – no cellphone cameras. Places are limited, so please book timeously with Stefanie Rasztabiga via 021 872 3441 or kommunikasie@taalmuseum.co.za. More on Peter Haarhoff at flickr.com/people/peterhaarhoff/
