International Museum Day in Paarl

A panel discussion in celebration of International Museum Day was held by the Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument in Paarl on 24 May and attended by 126 guests. The participants were Dr Willem Botha, chief editor of the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal (WAT), Catherine Snel Manager of Heritage and Education at the ATM and the rapper Simon Witbooi, aka Hemel Besem.

According to Snel, this day is annually celebrated worldwide on or around 18 May, after being proclaimed by the International Committee of Museums in 1977 to raise awareness about the important role of museums in society.

“This year’s theme was ‘In touch with museum collections’. The management of museum collections is one of the most important functions of museums – in our case this includes both tangible and intangible examples. The panel discussion thus focused on the creation of new words and expressions, word play and metaphors. ”
