The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument (ATM) celebrated a festive International Museum Day on Saturday, 18 May 2019, in the Paarl’s iconic Toringkerk by acknowledging South Africa’s musical wealth – from riel dance and minstrels to traditional Xhosa dances and ballet. This year’s Museum Day theme was “Museums as a cultural centres: the future of traditions”; therefore, the event focused on the role of museums to serve as spaces in which traditions can be preserved, experienced and transformed. The groups that participated were Hotshot Panthers (klopse/minstrels), Boland Vastrappers (rieldans), Ulrich Benting & Myrchelle Williams (Latin American), Infinite Achievers’ Fabia & Aldan (ballroom), Diversity (hip-hop), Triple A’s Portia Adams, Mia Adendorff & Danike Adams (ballet), Bootscooters (line dancing), The Beats (kwaito) as well as Dalubuhle Primary (Xhosa and gumboot dances).
