Taalmonument’s last Full Moon Picnic on the horizon; free for under-18s

With the further easing of lockdown rules, it’s time to enjoy the outdoors before winter arrives. So, join the friendly staff of the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument to celebrate this summer season’s last Full Moon Picnic on Saturday, 27 March 2021, during a wonderful evening on the beautiful Paarl Mountain.

In support of the Centre for Astronomical Heritage’s project to develop indigenous names for full moons in Southern Africa, this picnic is dedicated to the Harvest Moon – it refers to the fact that the harvest of various summer cereals in South Africa is in full swing at this time of year.

These picnics are very popular with locals and tourists alike, who particularly enjoy the sunsets and incredible night scenes. Visitors can picnic anytime between 17:00 and 22:00 on the spread-out lawns, and have a look at the monument that is an exceptional, symbol-laden sculpture. Guests are encouraged to explore the area, and also have access to secure parking, outdoor games, children’s playgrounds as well as an outdoor writing exhibition (currently with new Arabic Afrikaans works).

Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic baskets and drinks (no glass). Dress warmly and bring a torch, and a mask. See www.taalmuseum.co.za/covid-19/ for the specific protocols.

Tickets are R40 per adult, R10 for SA students and free for anyone under 18 years – numbers will be limited. They are available from Computicket or at the gate, and no booking is required. Annual permits are available at R120 for individuals or R220 per family (currently offered at a 20%-discount), which includes access to all Full Moon Picnics. The evenings are held in aid of ‘Let’s Read!’, the Language Museum’s literacy project for children, and visitors are encouraged to donate a new or second-hand children’s book.
