Heritage Day herb market in Montagu

The Afrikaanse Taalmuseum en -monument in collaboration with Montagu Museum will present a special herb market day in celebration of Heritage Day on 24 September. Over the past year the two museums have been collaborating on a project about the importance of herbs as cultural and natural historical heritage.

The herb market day is held from 10:00 to 15:00 at the Montagu Museum Art Gallery. The day includes various activities, including a braai, potjiekos and a cheese and wine tasting. Entertainment includes a drummies’ show at 09:00, music and traditional children’s games. Talks and demonstrations will be held on subjects such as cooking with herbs and how to make hair products with herbs.

According to Catherine Snel, manager of Heritage and Education at the Taalmuseum, they would like to stimulate discussion about the various facets of herbs in order to highlight indigenous knowledge of herbs and the uses thereof.

“We would like to offer the public an opportunity to come and exhibit their herb products free of charge. The only condition is that every product must include herbs and that the recipe must be supplied to us. A deposit of R50 is payable to secure a stall.

“As part of our project we have already had discussions with herb specialists who shared stories, uses and remedies . We are busy documenting everything we recorded. The information will be available at our museums as well as local libraries.”
